Domingos Rebelo

Domingos Rebelo • 1891–1975 Born in São Miguel, he is a leading figure in Azorean painting. Trained in Paris at the prestigious Académie Julian and Grand-Chaumière, Rebelo masterfully combined international influence with the soul of the islands. His work expertly captures everything from the customs and religiosity of the people to portraits of profound sensitivity, such as those you can see in this gallery.

José Júlio de Souza Pinto

José Júlio de Souza Pinto   1856–1939 Born in Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira Island), he was one of the most brilliant painters of his generation, belonging to the first group of Portuguese naturalists. He made his career in France, where he gained international recognition and numerous medals at the Paris Salons. Despite the distance, the "saudade" (longing) and Portuguese sentiment always remained alive in his delicate touch, visible in his pastels and oils.

Ana Vieira

Ana Vieira • 1940–2016 Although born in Coimbra, her childhood in São Miguel marked her artistic journey. A pioneer and avant-garde artist, Ana Vieira is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century in Portugal. Her work broke with the barriers of traditional painting, exploring space, theatre and installation, always questioning the relationship between the observer and the work of art.

Rui Filipe

Rui Filipe • 1928–1997 Born in Mozambique, Rui Filipe found the foundations for his training in Lisbon, as a disciple of Domingos Rebelo. His painting is marked by a profound lyricism and a "serene solitude". The portrait exhibited here, dated 1944, already reveals his ability to confer a sculptural and monumental dimension to the figures he portrayed.

Natália Correia

Natália Correia • 1923–1993 Born in Fajã de Baixo (São Miguel), Natália was much more than an artist; she was a force of nature in Portuguese intellectual life. Poet, essayist, and member of parliament, her civic courage and ethical aesthetic defined the second half of the 20th century. Here, we see her artistic side expressed in portraits that, like her writing, seek the essence of the soul and freedom.

Victor Câmara

Victor Câmara • 1921–1998 Born in Ponta Delgada and a student of Domingos Rebelo, Victor Câmara distinguished himself as a caricaturist and portraitist. His figurative and naturalistic style evolved to faithfully capture the landscapes and people of the Azores. His mastery in the use of pastel and watercolor earned him recognition as one of the great interpreters of the visual identity of the islands.

Carlos Carreiro • b. 1946

Born in Ponta Delgada, Carlos Carreiro is a master of narrative figuration. His work is a bold fusion of Surrealism, Pop Art, and Comics, where vibrant color and detailed humor transform historical and everyday episodes into scenes full of vitality. He was one of the founders of the historic "Grupo Puzzle," and his work is an invitation to discover infinite and ironic details.
