Floor 2: Between Faith and Landscape
On this floor, the artistic journey is divided between devotion and contemplation of nature. Explore the space dedicated to Domingos Rebelo, where spirituality and the identity of São Miguel merge, and walk through the corridors where the landscape – sometimes naturalistic, sometimes abstract – takes center stage.
Domingos Rebelo
A space dedicated to honoring one of the pillars of Azorean art. In this corner, the works invite reflection on the religiosity and daily life of the islands.
Domingos Rebelo • 1891–1975
Born in São Miguel, Domingos Rebelo is a central figure in the history of 20th-century Portuguese painting. He began his training in Paris, where he came into contact with artistic avant-gardes at the Académie Julian and the Grande-Chaumière. Upon returning to the Azores, he dedicated his life to capturing the essence of the Azorean soul, from customs and religious festivals to the drama of emigration (being the author of the famous painting "The Emigrants"). His masterful technique and ability to imbue popular themes with dignity and light made him a visual ambassador for the islands.
Corridor: Horizons and Perspectives
The encounter between classical naturalism and a personal interpretation of the territory.
On the way to the Temporary Exhibition Space, the environment is punctuated by different perspectives on the land and light. Although the focus is on the naturalist mastery of José Júlio de Sousa Pinto, the walk is enriched by the presence of Brites Cunha da Silveira and Domingos Rebelo, whose works complement this visual journey through the memory and identity of the places.
José Júlio de Sousa Pinto • 1856–1939
Born in Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island, he was one of the most brilliant painters of his generation and one of the first Portuguese naturalists. Although he lived much of his life in France, where he achieved enormous international prestige and was awarded prizes at the Paris Salons, he never lost his emotional connection to Portugal. His work is marked by a delicate touch and a profound sensitivity in capturing atmosphere and light, conveying to his canvases a constant "longing" for the landscapes of his homeland.
Corridor: The Expression of Gesture
The transition to abstraction and lyricism in contemporary forms.
Next to the elevators, Luís França's art proposes a different visual experience, where gesture and color replace direct figuration.
Luís França • b. 1953
Born in Ponta Delgada, Luís França is a leading name in contemporary painting. A graduate of the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, his career is marked by an informal and gestural style of painting. His work explores broad chromatic surfaces with a lyrical intention, where beauty emerges from the relationship between forms and colors in often indeterminate spaces. With an extensive career as a teacher and art critic, Luís França creates works that suggest a muralist dimension, inviting the viewer to a free and emotional interpretation.
Temporary Exhibition
A place for dialogue between new languages and the essence of the archipelago.

Ana Gil
Ana Gil is a left-handed illustrator and creative from Lisbon. Her connection to the Azores stems from a "continuous wonder" at discovering the island's geography, transforming this curiosity into meticulous work that inhabits the border between real observation and artistic interpretation.
