Urbano Resendes: Silence and Matter
A journey marked by the refinement of forms, where white and elements of Azorean nature take center stage.
Urbano Resendes • b. 1949
Born in São Miguel, Urbano Resendes is one of the most unique voices in contemporary Azorean art. His upbringing on an island of volcanic origin and activity allowed him immediate contact with the sea and fire, elements that are evident in his work. He studied at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in Lisbon and London, and his painting evolved into a style where landscape and the animal world are recurring themes, treated with a complex simplicity. The frequent use of white as the dominant color expresses his search for the essential and for purity. For Urbano, art is a process of reduction until only what is fundamental remains.
Carlos Carreiro: Stories in Color
Irony and pop imagery meet in this corridor, revealing a vibrant vision of identity and everyday life.
Carlos Carreiro • b. 1946
Born in Ponta Delgada, Carlos Carreiro is a master of narrative figuration. A graduate in Painting from the Porto School of Fine Arts, he was one of the founders of the historic "Puzzle Group," which marked Portuguese art in the 1970s by exploring individual freedom and political awareness. His work is recognized for its bold combination of Surrealism, Pop Art, and Comics. Through vibrant colors and humorous details, Carreiro transforms historical and mythological episodes, as well as scenes from everyday life, into compositions full of vitality and spirit.
