Although born in Coimbra, Ana Vieira spent her childhood in São Miguel. She was considered one of the most influential artists in 20th-century Portuguese art, standing out as a pioneer in practices that cross painting, sculpture, photography, and installation. Her career was marked by a departure from traditional painting, seeking to create metaphorical "simulacra" and scenic constructions that question the barrier between art and life, and between private and public space.
